What To Do After A Car Accident

The first hour after a crash can feel overwhelming. Use this checklist to protect your safety, your records, and your next steps.

1. Check For Injuries And Move To Safety

Check yourself and your passengers first. If there are injuries, call 911 immediately. If vehicles can be moved safely, get out of active traffic lanes.

2. Call 911 And Request A Police Report

Even for minor collisions, having an official report helps with insurance and documentation.

3. Exchange Information

Collect names, phone numbers, insurance details, license plate numbers, and vehicle make/model information for all involved drivers.

4. Document The Scene

Take photos of vehicle damage, road conditions, signs, visible injuries, and the overall scene. If there are witnesses, collect their names and contact information.

5. Decide How To Handle The Insurance Claim

In most cases, reporting the crash is the safest option. For very minor incidents, you may decide to handle costs privately, but do so carefully and in writing.

6. Seek Medical Evaluation Promptly

Symptoms can appear later. A timely medical evaluation protects your health and provides useful records.

7. Plan Repair Or Replacement

If your vehicle is repairable, compare estimates and timelines. If it is declared a total loss, review settlement terms carefully before purchasing a replacement.
